How to judge the off-road capability of a car?

The number of differential locks is one of the most important criteria. For example, urban SUVs usually only have one electronic differential lock.
If you understand off-road vehicles, you will find that there are two differential locks on the front and rear axles. The most advanced off-road vehicles have three locks. In addition to the differential locks on the front and rear axles, there is also a central differential lock.

What is a "differential"

When the car is turning, the turning radius of the outer wheel is larger than that of the inner wheel, which requires that the rotation speed of the outer wheel is higher than that of the inner wheel when turning. Even if the road surface is very flat, the rolling radius of each tire cannot actually be equal due to different tire wear levels, different loads or different inflation pressures. The role of the differential is to meet the different requirements of the wheels on both sides of the car during driving.

If your car does not have a differential, and the two wheels rotate at the same speed, when turning, the wheels will inevitably slide while rolling, which will accelerate tire wear and increase the power consumption of the car. In order to ensure that the tires on both sides are always in a pure rolling state, the axles and wheels on both sides are driven respectively through the differential, so that they can be rotated at different speeds, so that there is a wheel speed difference between the inner and outer wheels when the vehicle is turning.

Since the differential allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds, on muddy roads, when one wheel slips, all the power will be consumed on the rapidly spinning slipping wheel, causing the other wheels to lose power and the car completely stuck. Even if you slam on the accelerator, you can only spin the wheel on the low-grip side, and the wheel on the opposite side can't move forward because of insufficient driving force.

In order to avoid such a situation where the differential helps the vehicle when the vehicle is on a bad road, smart humans invented the differential lock.

How the differential lock works?

Differential locks help the vehicle get out of trouble by making the differential weak or ineffective when the wheels lose traction, distributing power evenly to the wheels.

There are two common differential locks: claw type and multi-plate clutch type. There are three control methods: manual manual operation, torque induction control and electronic hydraulic control. The Torsen differential is an exception, which automatically locks or loosens according to the magnitude of the internal differential torque, that is, when the differential torque in the differential is small, it acts as a differential, and when the differential torque in the differential is small, it acts as a differential. The differential will automatically lock when the torque is too high. No special control mechanism is required, and it has a differential lock function, which is generally used as a central differential.

Central differential lock: It is to lock the central differential to form a rigid connection between the front and rear axles, so that the wheels of the front and rear axles rotate synchronously, so that even if one axle slips, the wheels on the two axles still have driving force, so that you can Get the car out.

Front and rear differential lock: The main function is to lock the front and rear differentials to form a rigid connection between the two front wheels or between the two rear wheels to prevent power loss.

What is the relationship between the two: when it is necessary to get out of trouble, first lock the central differential lock, and the power is transmitted to the front and rear axles according to the ratio of 50:50. Quick lock prevents power loss.
